My Favourite Fiji Destinations & How to explore them

Fiji might already be calling your name if you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a place where turquoise waters meet lush jungle. A warm smile will greet you at every turn, and the pace of life slows down just enough for you to breathe deeply. This Pacific paradise is made up of multiple islands, each offering something a little different.

My family comes from this island paradise and we often return to a handful of Fiji’s most iconic destinations: Nadi, Suva, Beachcomber Island, and Treasure Island. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own unforgettable trip to these spots.

Things to know before you go…

Cash vs. Card – If you’re staying at one of the resorts, or islands it can be easy to place most things on a tab then make one payment at the end to avoid credit card fees. In more local areas, especially markets, cash is preferred.

Suva: Fiji’s Capital

Located on Viti Levu, Suva is the country’s capital and largest city. Suva gives you a deeper glimpse into modern Fiji—diverse, dynamic, and full of character. It’s a lively mix of colonial architecture, bustling markets, international cuisine, and a thriving arts scene. If you’re craving urban energy after days of island relaxation, Suva is the place to go.

Highlights:

  • Suva Municipal Market: One of the best places to sample local fruits, spices, and kava.
  • Fiji Museum & Thurston Gardens: Offers insight into the country’s history, from ancient voyaging to colonial influence. The gardens are also a good spot to visit at twilight to see all the fruit bats flying about.
  • Albert Park & Waterfront: Great for people-watching and soaking up the city’s rhythm. There’s a cool spot to dine here called Tiko’s Floating Seafood Restaurant!

Nadi: Culture, Colour, and Local Flavour

As one of Fiji’s main urban centres, Nadi has a vibrant mix of Fijian and Indo-Fijian culture, with street markets, and colourful temples. It’s also the main transportation hub for the western islands.

Travelling into Nadi’s city centre is an easy way to experience local Fijian life beyond the resorts. If you’re looking for a more direct route to the town from the resorts in Denerau, look for the yellow bus, where a one way ride will cost you a little under $3 FJD.

Things to do in Nadi:

  • Nadi Markets: Ideal for picking up local crafts, wood carvings, kava bowls, and woven goods.
  • Garden of the Sleeping Giant: Located just outside the city, this lush botanical garden is packed with orchids and rainforest walkways.

Denarau: Fiji’s Resort Playground

Just a short drive from Nadi International Airport, Denarau Island is the polished, upscale heart of Fiji tourism. With its cluster of luxury resorts such as Sofitel, Hilton and Sheraton and an 18-hole championship golf course. If you love comfort, convenience and coastal beauty, Denarau is an ideal base for your holiday.

My family recently stayed at the Sheraton. There are a total of six pools to enjoy – my favourite was the one by the Sheraton villas that winds around a small garden walkway.

Travelling in Denerau is easy—everything is walkable or connected by the Bula Bus, a hop-on hop-off shuttle that loops the island.

The Bula Bus offers a great option if you are travelling across the different resorts throughout the day as they offer passes passes for certain time frames allowing you to hop on and off as much as you want, and their bus service runs every 15 minutes from 8am – 11pm.

There is also the bustling Port Denarau Marina. It is the perfect springboard for exploring the islands, packed with restaurants, shops, and tour operators. It’s the departure point for most island-hopping adventures, including getting to the Mamanuca islands like Beachcomber & Treasure…

Beachcomber Island: Fiji’s Famous Party Island

If you’re craving sun, snorkelling, and a little social buzz, Beachcomber Island is for you. Just a short boat ride from Denarau, this tiny island is known for its youthful energy, beachfront bars, and classic backpacker vibes. The resort has been recently renovated and this is also the island that hosts Spring Break: Fiji in November each year!

Why visit Beachcomber:

  • Stunning beaches and shallow reefs perfect for snorkelling
  • Daily events, music, and evening entertainment
  • Great for budget travellers or anyone looking for a fun, social atmosphere
  • Access to water sports like jet skiing, paddleboarding, and parasailing

Beachcomber is small enough to walk around in minutes—but lively enough to keep you entertained for days.

Across from Beachcomber sits Treasure Island. You can day trip to either island for around $20FJD and a $7FJD landing fee.

Treasure Island: Relaxation Meets Adventure

Neighbouring Beachcomber, but offering a more relaxed atmosphere, Treasure Island is perfect for couples, families, and travellers looking to unwind. With its classic white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back boutique resort, it feels like stepping into a postcard.

What makes Treasure Island special:

  • Turtle Sanctuary: A key conservation project where you can learn about and even help release baby turtles during certain times of the year.
  • Water and beachfront activities: Snorkeling, mini-golf, glass-bottom boats, and cultural activities.
  • Tranquil Vibe: A different energy from Beachcomber—more serene, yet still close enough for island hopping.
  • Large infinity pool: Laze about in the sun on lounge beds or swim to escape the heat and you can do it all with poolside food & beverage service available.

Treasure Island strikes a wonderful balance: peaceful, charming, and stunningly beautiful.

Final Thoughts: Fiji Has Something for Every Traveller

Fiji is endlessly diverse in experiences. From the luxury of Denarau, to the energetic streets of Suva and Nadi, to the idyllic Mamanuca islands. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, culture, or connection, you’ll find it in abundance—and always with a warm “Bula!” along the way. Each of these spots shows a different side of Fiji, and together, they can create an unforgettable journey.
